Community Digital Champions, connecting Queenslanders to our digital future.

William Harrington - Round 1, 2017 Champion

Changing lives through agriculture and connectivity

William Harrington is a grazier and computer systems engineer who combines his talents to manufacture practical electronic technology for agriculture.

Based at his cattle station north of Richmond in North-West Queensland, William serves on a number of committees focused on up-and-coming technologies that can improve agricultural efficiency. He has spoken about this topic at events throughout Australia. He hopes that these community contributions, as well as his business activities, can make a real difference and change lives.

William has already made significant digital improvements to his community and the agricultural industry by:

  • forming Wi-Sky QLD, a company that uses wireless technology to provide high-speed internet and unlimited downloads to cattle stations in the Richmond Shire
  • partnering with Richmond Shire Council to provide high-speed fibre connections to the new council administration centre
  • championing the use of technology to improve the environmental footprint of agriculture
  • educating people in remote Queensland about the value of improved connectivity for them and their businesses.

William was also awarded the 2016 Nuffield Farming Scholarship. With this, he has been able to travel the world to study the adoption of technology in the beef industry — something he is very passionate about.

William operates his own company, Harrington Systems Electronics. His innovative, low-cost solutions supply much-needed technology to farmers and people in remote areas. One example includes a solar powered remote camera monitoring system.

As a digital champion, William is planning face-to-face information and mentoring activities on subjects such as ‘introduction to computer networking’, so that he can help young people in his community grasp a broader understanding of IT and engineering. He will continue to serve his community and the agricultural industry by researching, creating and providing innovative technology.
